Well actually my Merriman Webster doesn't have Hokie in it but it does have hoke which is pronounced hok (long o). But it is an older one that I have had for several years.

Whatever a Hokie is, I don't know. But I have always understood it to have originated in a cheer contest. But, I really don't care either because compared to what VT was in my younger days they have made leaps and bounds and IMO do quite well with what they have for an alleged nutless turkey [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img] I grew up with VPI Fighting Gobblers and am still partial to that. </div></div>
get yourself a new version......i already pulled the definition off the online version and posted it earlier

as for the duck and ibis thing

look at our old mascot......with the longer beak.....thats a difference between an ibis and a duck......an ibis has a very long narrow beak

My whole point. If the cheer is named after a castrated turkey then WHY isn't it in my OLDER version since the cheer is 75+ years old? Ding, ding, ding!! And you are an Oregon fan?

im not an oregon fan......canes fan.......and as for the bit about being able to see it best in our old mascot......even the new sebastian costume has a longer beak than that of a duck......albeit.....not as clear as it used to be

All I know is that the cheer started way back when and in my older dictionary the word, much less a definition is not there. Therefore the definition is a recent one which does away with the theory that some VT fan who wrote the cheer did so because castrated turkey was the definition then. And I'm glad you cleared that up, I should have figured. Since you can't talk sense to most Canes fans.

No, I've said I could care less. But to keep up some ignorant argument(and I'm guilty)over a castrated turkey definition that came along years AFTER the cheer, and yes, if you do your homework it was a cheer, is senseless. Guess the Canes must have sucked the balls off that turkey cause they sure sucked balls last week for the Wahoos.
